
LAKE RIVIERA MIDDLE SCHOOL IS THE ONLY SCHOOL IN OCEAN COUNTY TO BE AWARDED AS A 2011 NATIONAL SCHOOL OF CHARACTER
Lake Riviera is Among Only 8 Other Schools in New Jersey to Achieve this Honor
May 17, 2011 Brick, NJ – The Character Education Partnership (CEP) out of Washington, D.C. has just named Lake Riviera Middle School a 2011 National School of Character (NSOC). Lake Riviera Middle School is the only school in Ocean County to hold this award. This is the first time the school has achieved National School of Character status, the second time the school has become a national finalist, and the third time the school has been recognized by CEP as a State School of Character. Lake Riviera Middle School is one of 43 schools and 1 school district among 30 participating states being recognized nationwide in 2011.
Since 2008, Lake Riviera Middle School has achieved 5 Promising Practices from CEP for Literature at the Lake, Lil’ Scientists, Laker Delivery System, Book Buddies, and Kettle Creek Crusaders. As part of the National Schools of Character program, CEP recognizes Promising Practices by schools and districts that implement unique and specific strategies in character education. In 2010 Lake Riviera Middle School achieved the CEP’s Profile in Character award for their exemplary and unique demonstration of CEP’s Eleven Principles of Effective Character Education. Specifically, Lake Riviera was recognized for integrating service into the school curriculum.

Since 1998, CEP has recognized schools for their outstanding character development of students through its prestigious annual NSOC program. Schools of Character are districts that provide exemplary comprehensive character education programs that consistently yield positive results in student behavior, citizenship, school climate, and academic performance. CEP’s Eleven Principles of Effective Character Education, which defines excellence in character education, guides the evaluation and selection of finalists and winners.
As a National School of Character, CEP will honor the 2011 National Schools of Character at the National Forum on Character Education, to be held October 19 - 22 in San Francisco. At the ceremony, Lake Riviera Middle School will receive an NSOC award, banner, and check for $1,000. After being named NSOC, schools serve as models and mentors, helping other educators transform their school cultures and improve academics and behavior.
