NFL Player Visits VMMS to Encourage Anti-Bullying

On March 9, 2011 The School Based Youth Services Program at Veterans Memorial Middle School sponsored the non-profit organization Steered Straight to come and speak with the 6th Grade students on the topic of Anti-Bullying.  The purpose of Steered Straight is to reach youth through motivational speaking, life-sharing seminars and interactive curriculum in order to give students the ability to develop a sense of understanding about the positive and negative choices in their lives. Presenters included Michael DeLeon, President of Steered Straight, John Fuqua, and former NFL Player Hank Poteat.  Each discussed and shared personal experiences in dealing with bullying and believing in yourself to overcome obstacles to be a better person by standing up to bullying.
